Electrolytic Capacitor Basics
Electrolytic capacitor is a polarised type of capacitor. Polarised means it has different positive and negative pins. In this type of capacitor, a metal acts as positive plate, anode, and it form an insulating oxide layer. This oxide layer acts as dielectric. A solid, liquid or get type of electrolyte acts as negative plate, cathode, and covers the oxide layer formed by metal plate. This type of capacitor has high capacitance-voltage product per unit, because it has very thin dielectric oxide layer and enlarged surface, gives high capacitance value.
Applications of Electrolytic Capacitor
- To reduce voltage fluctuations in various filtering devices.
- In output and input smoothing to filter when DC signal is weak with AC component.
- For noise filtering or decoupling in power supplies.
- For coupling signals between amplifier stages and to store energy in flash lamps.
